AcuPulse CO₂ Laser Treatment

AcuPulse™ is an advanced CO₂ laser platform used for ablative and fractional resurfacing procedures.

Lumenis presents the system as a versatile resurfacing platform with multiple treatment modes, including the AcuScan120™ fractional scanner and SuperPulse™ pulse technology.

The device is used in dermatology for wrinkle reduction, scar revision, uneven pigmentation, dyschromia, actinic keratosis, and textural skin rejuvenation, among other indications.

CO₂ laser energy is absorbed strongly by water within the skin. This allows controlled vaporization of targeted tissue and a thermal effect in the surrounding dermis.

Lumenis states that SuperPulse™ delivers high peak power in a short pulse duration, supporting deep penetration with a favorable balance between ablation and coagulation. In fractional mode, the AcuScan120™ scanner creates precisely distributed columns of treatment, leaving intervening untreated skin to accelerate healing.

Depending on the treatment mode, AcuPulse™ may be used for superficial resurfacing or for deeper remodeling and scar-focused protocols.

AcuPulse™ may be considered for moderate to advanced photoaging, perioral and periocular wrinkles, acne scars, selected surgical or traumatic scars, uneven texture, dyschromia, actinic keratosis, and broader resurfacing indications where a more intensive laser treatment is appropriate.

Lumenis specifically references fine lines, uneven pigmentation, texture irregularity, and scar revision among its indications.

After assessment and consent, the skin is prepared and the appropriate treatment depth, density, and mode are selected. Depending on the intensity of resurfacing, treatment may require topical anesthetic, local anesthetic, or other pain-management measures.

Laser energy is then delivered in either fully ablative or fractional patterns. Recovery time depends heavily on treatment intensity, density, and area treated. More superficial settings may involve shorter downtime, while deeper resurfacing requires more structured wound care and longer healing.

Potential benefits include smoothing of coarse texture, reduction in visible wrinkles, softening of acne scars, improvement in dyschromia, and long-term collagen remodeling.

Compared with lower-intensity rejuvenation devices, CO₂ resurfacing can produce more substantial structural change, but this comes with greater recovery demands and more intensive aftercare.

Before and After Care

Pre-treatment planning is especially important for CO₂ resurfacing. Sun avoidance is necessary, and certain skincare regimens may be prescribed in advance.

In selected patients, antiviral prophylaxis may be indicated, particularly when treating perioral regions or in patients with a history of herpes simplex.

The skin must be free of active infection, and the physician should review scarring tendency, pigmentation history, recent procedures, and medications.

Aftercare is a critical part of outcome quality. Treated skin may be red, swollen, warm, and crusted during the early healing phase. Patients typically need gentle cleansing, barrier support, prescribed wound care, strict photoprotection, and close adherence to medical instructions until re-epithelialization is complete.

Downtime may range from several days to several weeks, depending on the depth and extent of treatment.

Risks and Side Effects

As an ablative resurfacing procedure, AcuPulse™ carries more recovery and more risk than non-ablative treatments. Expected temporary effects include redness, swelling, crusting, oozing, and sensitivity.

Potential complications include infection, prolonged erythema, delayed healing, acneiform eruption, scarring, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation.

Proper patient selection, parameter choice, and disciplined aftercare are essential.

A detailed medical consultation is mandatory before CO₂ resurfacing. This includes assessment of the indication, skin type, downtime tolerance, risk profile, and expected benefit relative to other available options.

The treatment plan is highly individualized. Pricing is determined after consultation.
