Stellar M22 Treatment

Stellar M22™ is a modular multi-application platform used in dermatology and aesthetic medicine to treat a broad range of skin concerns.

Lumenis describes it as the latest evolution of its multi-platform systems, combining different light- and laser-based technologies in one platform.

The device is used for indications including pigmentation, vascular lesions, acne, skin rejuvenation, uneven tone, fine lines, and selected textural concerns. Lumenis states that the platform can address more than 30 indications and is supported by more than 150 clinical studies.

Depending on indication, Stellar M22™ may use IPL and/or non-ablative fractional technology such as ResurFX®. IPL works by selective photothermolysis: emitted light is absorbed by specific chromophores, primarily melanin and hemoglobin, allowing treatment of pigmented lesions, vascular changes, and diffuse photodamage.

For rejuvenation and textural improvement, Lumenis states that the system stimulates new collagen and elastin fibers to improve tone, texture, and fine lines.
ResurFX® creates controlled microthermal injury in the skin without full surface ablation, supporting dermal remodeling and collagen renewal with limited downtime compared with ablative resurfacing.

Stellar M22™ is commonly considered for sun damage, lentigines and age spots, diffuse redness, facial telangiectasia, rosacea-associated vascular changes, acne, post-inflammatory discoloration, dull skin tone, mild textural irregularities, and fine lines.

Lumenis also presents the platform as suitable for skin toning and broader rejuvenation protocols.

Treatment is customized to the skin concern and skin type. After medical assessment, the appropriate handpiece and settings are selected.

During IPL treatment, a series of light pulses is delivered to the skin to target vascular or pigmented structures while preserving surrounding tissue. In fractional treatment modes, controlled microthermal zones are created to stimulate dermal repair and collagen production.

Session duration generally depends on the indication and size of the treatment area, but facial treatments are commonly completed within approximately 20 to 40 minutes in routine clinical practice.

Potential benefits include a clearer complexion, reduction of visible pigmentation and redness, improved skin radiance, better tone uniformity, and gradual collagen stimulation for smoother, fresher-looking skin.

For acne-focused protocols, Lumenis states that IPL may reduce inflammation and bacterial burden while also helping reduce sebaceous activity. For vascular indications, published data highlighted on the Stellar M22 page describe meaningful clearance rates in selected lesion types.

Before and After Care

Sun avoidance is essential before treatment, especially for IPL-based procedures. Tanned skin, recent self-tanning products, photosensitizing medications, or active inflammatory skin conditions may increase the risk of adverse effects and may require postponement.

The skin should be intact and free of infection. Patients should disclose recent peels, retinoid use, isotretinoin history, and any history of pigment changes or melasma during the consultation.

Following treatment, transient redness, mild swelling, warmth, or a sunburn-like sensation may occur. Pigmented spots may temporarily darken before flaking or fading. Strict daily photoprotection is essential after treatment.

Patients are usually advised to avoid excessive heat, direct UV exposure, aggressive exfoliation, and irritating topical products for several days, depending on the protocol performed.

Risks and Side Effects

Possible side effects include erythema, edema, temporary darkening of pigmented lesions, mild crusting, and transient sensitivity.

Less commonly, blistering, prolonged redness, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation may occur, especially in predisposed skin types or when recent sun exposure is present.

Appropriate patient selection and physician-guided settings are therefore essential.

A consultation is mandatory to determine the indication, assess skin type, exclude contraindications, and define the correct treatment settings and sequence.

Some patients benefit from a single session, while others require a treatment course. Pricing is determined after consultation.
